In March 1974, Mike Siegel interviewed Father Eugene Gallagher on the subject of Exorcism.
Father Gallagher was a professor at Georgetown University in 1949 when he taught the Course Philosophy of Religion in which he covered the issue of Exorcism. William Peter Blatty was his student.
In the 1960’s, Blatty became committed to writing about the subject and contacted Father Gallagher for information about Exorcisms done in the Catholic Church. Father Gallagher offered Blatty actual files of cases from the Church. Some of the events in the film were taken from these cases. In fact, it was a 12 year old boy, not a girl as depicted in the film.
The Exorcist was released in 2013 on Blue Ray Disc for the 40th anniversary of the original release of the film. A portion of the March 1974 interview was included in that release be Warner Home Video.

Excerpt From “the Morton Report” referring to the part of the Mike Siegel/Father Gallagher interview included on “The Exorcist (40th Anniversary Edition)”:
“The other new featurette, “Talk of the Devil,” is a 20-minute piece consisting of never-before-seen interviews conducted in 1974 with real-life priest Father Eugene Gallagher. This priest was apparently something of a consultant to Blatty during the writing of the novel. It’s interesting stuff, made all the more so by Gallagher’s dry, matter-of-fact discussion of an alleged exorcism. Incidentally, the interview was conducted by radio talk show host Mike Siegel, who I’m guessing has been sitting on this material for nearly 40 years (he’s specially thanked at the end of the piece). “
